Originally there was no way to tell Donald's nephews apart because their costumes were used interchanggeably. Since the stories for the Ducktales Televisin series were more complicated than they were for the short Donald Duck cartoons, it was deemed neccessary to distinguish among the three nephews. So Huey was dressed in red, Duey in Blue, and Louie in green. Note that the brightest hue of the three is red (Huey), the color of water, dew, is blue (Dewey), and that leaves Louie, and the leaves are green. The nephews lso appeared in the Donald Duck comic strip and made their debut in it on October 17, 1937.
